Notification

  • November 9, 2017: Registration of contest participants began.
  • November 16, 2017: Sample code (problem1_toolkit_EN_r1.zip) updated.
  • November 22, 2017: The rules for evaluating the final score have been updated. Please see the scoring section of the problem page for details.

We would like to announce that the algorithms which have been submitted to the first contest will not be disclosed until the end of the second contest. This measure has been taken for the following reason: Original ideas which appear in submissions to the first contest, may prove useful in creating successful submissions to the second contest. We feel that spreading these ideas should not be possible without explicit permission of the corresponding author. On the other hand, should a participant of the first contest feel, they want to spread their idea, we encourage sharing their submissions through SNS.

Overview

  • This is a marathon-type programming contest sponsored jointly by Hokkaido University and Hitachi, Ltd.
  • Hitachi Ltd. has established a Hitachi Hokkaido University laboratory on the campus of Hokkaido University. Hitachi is collaborating with Hokkaido University on the development of a new-concept computing, one different from that of the conventional von Neumann-type computing that has predominated until now.
  • This contest will be held two times in 2017. (For information on the second contest, please click). Each time the contest is held, we will provide problems related to graph conversion algorithms, which are regarded as the key technology of the new-concept computing.
  • The problems will be provided both in Japanese and English.

Rules

  • Anyone can participate, regardless of organization, age, or location. Any person desiring to participate should click the Participation Registration button. A person can register anytime, from today until the day on which the contest ends.
  • The contests will be held for a two-week period. (The first contest will be held from November 15 to 28.) The contest will be carried out online.
  • During the contest period, a participant can submit answers as many times as he/she likes. However, within one hour after submitting a solution the server may reject further submissions in order to avoid overload. So please wait for at least one hour before you submit improved solutions.

Prizes

  • The top-scoring contestants will receive the following prizes.
  • 1st place 300,000 yen
  • 2nd place  50,000 yen
  • 3rd place  30,000 yen
  • 4th—10th places special gifts (Hokkaido University and Hitachi Ltd. goods*)
  • * We will also present memorabilia to those who missed winning a prize in the top ten, but ranked 11th to 50th. In addition, persons who were not in the top 50 will be chosen by lottery to receive a small gift. The drawing results will be sent only to the winners in the lottery drawing by email.

Awards Ceremony

  • An Awards Ceremony for the contests will be held at the luncheon of the 80th National Convention of the Information Processing Society of Japan.
  • Date and time: March 15, 2018 (Thursday) 12:10-13:10
  • Place: Waseda University Nishi Waseda Campus (Ohkubo, Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo, Japan)
  • Content: Explanation of the contest background, Explanation of problems, Awards to top scorers in 1st and 2nd contests, Commemorative lecture* (invited) by each top scorer

  • Please read AtCoder Inc.’s terms of service, tutorials, rules, glossaries, and frequently asked questions.

Applications of the contest questions
(For those interested in the contest background)

  • With a conventional computer, programmers write a program that sets up procedures the computer follows to execute the desired processing. Then, as the computer carries out this program sequentially, unique values are derived.
  • On the other hand, in the new-concept computing, we identify the components of physical phenomena as the factors in social problems that are inherent in social systems.
  • The following figure shows the calculation flow for this new-concept computing.
    1. Preprocessing is carried out to map the social system to a graph((1)→(2)). This preprocessing is an operation that formulates social problems inherent in the social system in terms of the energy functions of physical phenomena. Here the factors in social problems are treated as variables of energy functions.
    2. A graph conversion algorithm is run. This algorithm converts a complex, irregular graph structure into a simple and regular structure that can be implemented into hardware((2)→(3)).
    3. The convergence behavior of physical phenomena is conducted and observed. The value of the factor when the energy function reaches a predetermined value is the required approximate solution. Using dedicated hardware to run and monitor the convergence operation makes possible the derivation of approximate solutions in a short time((3)→(4)).

  • The challenge in achieving this type of computer is the efficiency of the graph conversion algorithm. Hokkaido University and Hitachi are together aiming to resolve this challenge through open innovation.
